U.S. Army Soldiers with the 2nd Security Force Assistance Brigade and Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) conduct pre-deployment drills with the Armed Forces of Djibouti’s Bataillon d'Intervention Rapide at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Feb. 22, 2024. The drills, including a visit to the engagement skills trainer facility, were completed in preparation for exercise Justified Accord, led by U.S Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF). JA24 is U.S. Africa Command's largest exercise in East Africa, running from February 26 - March 7. Led by SETAF-AF, and hosted in Kenya, this year's exercise will incorporate personnel and units from 23 nations. This multinational exercise builds readiness for the U.S. joint force, prepares regional partners for UN and AU mandated missions, and increases multinational interoperability in support of humanitarian assistance, disaster response and crisis response. SETAF-AF forensic team deploys expertise at sea, protects US and allied assets
VICENZA, Italy – When U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) identified a need to gather evidence, the U.S. Army’s Joint Theater Forensic Analysis Center (JTFAC) answered the call. Its forensic team launched into action at sea, turning expertise into real-world impact. At the request of CENTCOM and AFRICOM, JTFAC personnel deployed to collect and analyze forensic evidence from a vessel carrying Iranian-supplied advanced conventional weapons. The seized cargo included ballistic missile components, anti-ship ballistic missile parts and a warhead, all bound for Houthi rebel forces in Yemen. The forensic evidence helped secure a June 5, 2025, federal conviction of the ship’s captain, Muhammad Pahlawan, a Pakistani national who worked closely with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, on six charges related to smuggling Iranian-made advanced conventional weaponry destined for the Houthis in Yemen, as well as threatening multiple witnesses.
