SETAF-AF commander makes opening remarks at African Alumni Symposium

Maj. Gen. Todd R. Wasmund, commander of SETAF-AF in Vicenza, Italy, joined with dozens of army leaders from Africa to begin the week of discussion on "collaborative security building," the theme of this year's symposium. Wasmund signaled the need for collective commitment among participants to work together to solve mutual security challenges in Africa, such as the influence of malign actors.

SETAF-AF, Army War College host African Alumni Symposium Feb. 26 to March 2

Carlisle Barracks, Penn. – Former African graduates of the Army War College will return here this weekend to attend the African Alumni Symposium at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center Feb. 26 to March 2. The symposium is a U.S. Africa Command annual event bringing together African alumni from U.S. military education schools. Every three years, the Army takes its turn to host African graduates of the Army War College.

Mass. National Guard medical planner experiences Kenya for first time

U.S. Army Capt. James Hogan is a medical plans and operations officer, as well as executive officer for the 182nd Medical Company, Massachusetts National Guard. His hometown is Boston, Mass., but he also spent time in Georgia so he lacks the well-known Boston accent. On the civilian side, he works in the human resources department at the Veterans Affairs Boston Health System.

Mass National Guard supports Exercise Justified Accord in Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya—Justified Accord is U.S. Africa Command’s largest exercise in East Africa, bringing together more than 20 countries from four continents. Led by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), Justified Accord aims to increase partner readiness for peacekeeping missions, crisis response, and humanitarian assistance. Planning and executing logistics for an exercise this size can be a herculean effort. This is where the Joint Exercise Support Group comes in. Led by members of the Massachusetts National Guard, the JESG handles all the logistical needs for an exercise like Justified Accord.

Knowledge exchange: U.S., Chad militaries compare stories

A team of public affairs professionals from the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa exchanged best practices with 20 members of the Chadian armed forces at the Chadian General Staff of the Army Headquarters in N'Djamena, Chad, Jan. 23-27. Officers, sergeants and civilians from the U.S. and Chadian militaries participated in the military-to-military exchange.

African Lion 23 moves ahead

The next step in the year-long process to plan and conduct African Lion 23 concluded last week, here with the completion of the Pre Deployment Site Survey and Mid Planning Event, Jan. 17. The planning event, organized by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa included site visits and assessments at all four locations of the exercise, plus direct in-person planning in multiple locations to ensure all participants and locations are prepared for this large scale global exercise.

Justified Accord 23 (JA23), scheduled from Feb. 13-24, is led by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF). This multinational exercise brings together more than 20 countries from 3 continents to increase partner readiness for peacekeeping missions, crisis response and humanitarian assistance. JA 23 will feature the following events: An African Union academics course, a multinational field training exercise, a live-fire exercise, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief projects, as well as training on defensive cyber capabilities.

Military planners design African Lion 23 command and control exercise

U.S. military and interagency planners finished designing the scenario for Exercise African Lion 23 at the Joint Staff Suffolk Complex Dec. 5-16. The group of nearly 50 experts across all joint functions and several interagency disciplines developed a robust scenario that they think will test the warfighting capabilities of U.S. Africa Command and its service components, principally the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa.

U.S., Angola conclude inaugural military medical exercise

U.S. and Angolan militaries wrapped up a two week medical readiness exercise (MEDREX) with a closing ceremony, Nov. 18, 2022. The Angolan Armed Forces, in partnership with the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) and the 807th Medical Command, U.s. Army Reserve, hosted the MEDREX at the Principle Military Hospital in Luanda from Nov. 8-18, 2022. The event marked the first of its kind to be held in Angola.

NY Army Guard C-12 detachment Soldiers headed to Horn of Africa

LATHAM, New York--Five New York Army National Guard Soldiers who operate a C-12 transport plane based at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Latham, New York are headed to East Africa later this month to support U.S. forces there. The five Soldiers, and a sixth Soldier, who will deploy halfway through the nine-month rotation were honored during a Sunday, Nov. 6 ceremony at the flight facility.
